Ashanti and Nelly celebrated the impending arrival of their baby on Sunday with a yellow and white themed baby shower. The intimate event saw appearances from close friends and family, including rapper Fat Joe and his wife.
Fat Joe shared a message on Instagram, posting a touching photo from the shower and writing, “Today we had a Baby Shower, i love you my sister I’m sooooooo happy for yall guys GOD IS GREAT @ashanti @nelly @lolamilan1”.
Ashanti and Nelly rekindled their romance after a decade apart at Fat Joe and Ja Rule’s Verzuz battle in 2021. Three years later and the couple are now married and expecting their their first child together.
Fat Joe proudly takes some credit for bringing the pair back together. On Instagram Livein January, he said, “I immediately tell them I need 10 percent of this kid because if it wasn’t for Verzuz that I brought Nelly out [during] me against Ja Rule, that’s when they saw each other and energy connected again.That’s when he said, ‘I gotta have her.’ He was over there contemplating; he really wanted to go over there.”
He continued, “He goes over there, and that starts the conversation. You know somebody gotta crack the ice — I don’t know why they fell out.”
In a video shared by Brice D Vick, the parents-to-be were seen surrounded by their close friends and family. Ashanti, dressed in a a yellow a white skirt and crop top that showed off her baby bump, stood by Nelly, who Nelly who reminisced about how they rekindled their romance at the Verzuz event in 2021
“I said it felt like there was tension in the building. I said let me break the ice and i went over. But what everybody missed [was] that nice rub on my back.”
In April, Ashanti announced their pregnancy on Instagram, and the couple revealed their engagement on the same day. Recently, it was disclosed that the pair have also tied the knot!
This baby will be Ashanti’s first child and Nelly’s third. The “Hot in Herre” rapper is already a father to adult children, Chanelle, 29, and Cornell Haynes III, 24, from a previous relationship. Nelly also adopted his late sister Jackie Donahue’s kids, Shawn and Sydney Thomas, after she passed away from leukemia in 2005.
