And in the blink of an eye, just like that, it is time for Zaya Wade to consider what is the next step in her future, which appears to be, college! Recently, the 16-year-old, her parents, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, set off on the college circuit tour.
The 42-year-old NBA legend documented the trio’s visit to the University of Washington, captioning his carousel of images, “We’re in the College Visits season!!!”
The proud papa also shared snaps in his Instagram Story of the library’s intricately-vaulted ceiling and a popular Seattle tourist spot, Pike Place Market.
As a model, influencer, entrepreneur/designer, and LGBTQ+ activist, Zaya has a kaleidoscope of unique experiences that would unquestionably make her a true asset to any college or university in the world. And of course, her parents, especially her dad, will be there supporting and cheering her on every step of the way.
In a recent interview with People Magazine, Wade told the outlet that he strives to show Zaya “unconditional love.”
“I don’t want to just be one of those people who’s just been given to Zaya and she doesn’t feel open and confident in me,” he told the outlet. “I want to show her what unconditional love looks like so she can use me as this sounding board through life.”
In 2020, at the age of 12, Zaya came out publicly as transgender. Since then, we have seen her grow confident in the way she presents herself to the world. The freedom to embrace that growth and confidence is a result of the support and love that her father has given her.
“My dad is who truly inspires me the most,” she told Harper’s Bazaar for their Icons for 2023 issue. “Kids always tend to look up to their parents, but not only did I idolize him growing up and see him as a real person, I realize that he has played such an essential role in supporting me and the ways I choose to present myself to the world.”
The teen continued, “He’s been so supportive and my biggest advocate. He took the time and learned and grew. I want to have that same mentality going through anything in life.”
In addition to Zaya, Dwayne Wade also shares 22-year-old son Zaire, with ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches. The Hall of Famer is also father to five-year-old daughter, Kaavia James, with whom he shares with his wife, Gabrielle Union.
