On the cover of the first digital issue of Ayesha Curry’s magazine, Sweet July, the restaurateur and chef shared that she and her husband, NBA Golden State Warriors legend, Steph Curry, are expanding their family.
The soon-to-be mother-of-four opened up further discussing how she felt about being labeled a “geriatric pregnancy”.
“What’s been interesting has been my doctor’s appointments,” Ayesha stated in the interview about her latest pregnancy journey. “I’m in my 30s, and so there’s all this paperwork referring to the experience as a ‘geriatric pregnancy’ and all the concerns that come along with that.”
“I think there’s something that needs to be more nuanced when it comes to women, their age and conversations around having children. Many women in their 30s and 40s are going through this for the first time, and being told you’re ‘old’ feels alarming and wild. I think the narrative needs to be shifted a little bit.”
According to Webmd.com, the term “geriatric pregnancy,” has now been replaced with “advanced maternal age pregnancy”. The benchmark for “geriatric pregnancy” age is if you will be 35 or older on your due date.
The medical website also outlined the potential problems that can arise during a “geriatric pregnancy”. Potential issues that could affect both mother and child include:
- High blood pressure, which can lead to preeclampsia (dangerously high blood pressure and organ damage)
- Gestational diabetes
- Miscarriage or stillbirth
- Labor problems that require you to have a cesarean section
- Premature birth Low birthweight
- Chromosome disorders in the baby, like Down Syndrome
In the interview, Curry states that with this pregnancy she has a new “understanding” about her journey, especially since this is her “last” one.
“But one of the biggest differences [of this pregnancy] is a new understanding that this really does pass by in the blink of an eye,” she said. “And in the blink of an eye, it could also all be taken away. That’s encouraged me to slow down and take in every single little thing — especially with it being my last pregnancy.”
Curry and her husband share three children: eldest daughter, Riley, Ryan, and son, Canon.
