Black history is American history, and it is essential for those of African ancestry to delve deeper into learning about those who have had a significant impact on all aspects of life as we know it. From science and technology to the arts and beyond, Black people have been at the forefront of cultural and social movements that connect the past to the present. As we kick-off Black History Month 2024, here are a few activities for every age to help you celebrate and learn!
Learn the basics about Black History Month
We all know that Black History Month is from February 1-28, every year. But, do you know why February was chosen to celebrate Black History Month? Do you know when and why Black History Month became a federal celebration? Who were those that fought to make Black History Month a celebration from the beginning? Did you know that the U.S. isn’t the only country that celebrates Black History Month? If none of these are ringing any bells, then it is time to learn the basics about Black History Month. There are many resources online and a plethora of documentaries that discuss the foundation of how Black History Month came to be.
Explore art through Black History
This year’s Black History Month theme is “African Americans and the Arts.” What better way to celebrate in 2024 than by exploring art through Black History. This particular activity can take you beyond the month of February and last the entire year long as art includes not only painting and drawing, it also encompasses sculpture, literature, cinema, music, theater, architecture, etc. etc. In the world of “art” the contributions of African Americans is limitless.
Watch a Black History Month movie for movie night
If you are trying to figure out what to watch as a family, consider for the month of February only watching something that pertains to Black History. You can watch some of your favorites or find one that you haven’t yet seen. And of course, we have a recommendation for you…Genus MLK/X has just dropped on Disney+, Hulu, and National Geographic.
Read books by Black authors
Something fun for the entire family could be to have everyone read a different book by a Black author and, at the end of the month, get together and have a “book club night.” The entire family can talk and discuss about what they read and why the content is important to Black culture/history. This is something that the little one’s can even get in on as there are plenty of age appropriate books for them on the market by Black authors as well. And of course, last but not least, make sure that snacks are a part of “book club night!”
Have Fun!
Whatever you do for Black History Month, make sure that it is a family affair and that you are having fun. Black History is as rich and diverse as the content of Africa itself. You are never too old to learn something new. Also, by delving further into Black History, you never know what new things you will discover. So, dive in, celebrate, and have furn! You may just find out that 28-days are no where near enough and end up celebrating and learning until this time next year!
