When USC freshman guard Bronny James suffered cardiac arrest during a routine workout session in July, it sent ripples through the basketball community. Fans grew anxious, eager to uncover the reasons behind his sudden collapse. In response, the James family has released a statement that offers insight into the incident, his current health status, and his anticipated comeback to the sport.
According to the family statement, medical evaluations conducted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and subsequent assessments at the Mayo Clinic reveal that the likely trigger for Bronny James’ cardiac arrest was a congenital heart defect.
“It is an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated,” the James family said in their statement. “We are very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future. We will continue to provide updates to media and respectfully reiterate the family’s request for privacy.”
Bronny James, who arrived at USC in May with a five-star prospect rating, had been projected to be a first-round pick in the upcoming NBA draft. There was even speculation that he might have the chance to play alongside his father at the professional level.
Back in February 2022, LeBron initially floated the notion of eventually playing alongside his son in the NBA. He stated to The Athletic at the time, “My last year will be played with my son,” he told The Athletic at the time. “Wherever Bronny is at, that’s where I’ll be. I would do whatever it takes to play with my son for one year.”
