A FAMILY AFFAIR: RICHARD AND TINA LAWSON HOST WACO THEATER’S WEARABLE ART GALA

Richard and Tina Lawson hosted their annual WACO Theater Center Wearable Art Gala on Saturday (Oct. 21). The event was star-studded with Tina’s grandchildren, Daniel Julez J. Smith Jr. and Blue Ivy Carter, in attendance.

Daniel took pictures with his grandmother on the red carpet. The youngster, who recently celebrated his eighteenth birthday, was dressed to impress with a pinstripe suit and matching vest. Daniel opted to go without a tie but his attire, nevertheless, fit the theme of the evening, which was “Step Into Harlem Nights.”

Blue Ivy Carter also supported her family at the charity event. The youngster bid more than $80,000 on diamond earrings by Lorraine Schwartz at the gala.

“Y’all going to let her take it,” Keke Palmer, who served as the night’s host, said in reference to Blue’s bid. The youngster thought she had the earrings, which were previously owned by her mom, but was ultimately outbid by Mielle Organics founder Monique Rodriguez who bid $105,000 or the jewelry.

“Blue! She’s so rich,” Abbott Elementary actress Quinta Brunson said after the interaction. Brunson shared the segment, which she filmed, with her social media fans.

The Wearable Art Gala was created to raise funds to support the WACO Theater Center’s efforts to support youth in art. The theater center has several programs, including mentorships, that operate throughout the year. In fact, the WACO Theater Center has been able to continue its efforts to positively impact the community despite the coronavirus pandemic because of the generosity of its donors.

“As we continue to navigate the setbacks of the pandemic, we are excited for the opportunity to gather again in person and garner support for the artists, audiences, and young people that our work serves and will continue to serve,” Richard Lawson, co-founder of the WACO Theater Center, said of this year’s Wearable Art Gala. “[The Gala is] a party with a purpose and after two years virtually, I’m glad that we can connect, continue to pour into our mentees, and at the same time, honor a piece of our history through this artistic experience,” the actor added.

Tina Lawson along with her daughters, Solange Knowles and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, are honorary chairs of the WACO Theater Center. You can learn more about how to support the theater’s mission here!
