Misty Copeland is a mom! The ballet dancer recently revealed she and her husband, Olu Evans, welcomed a son named Jackson three months ago.
“I’m on maternity leave right now,” Misty told PEOPLE during an exclusive interview. “I have a 3-month-old,” Copeland shared. “But I will be back on the stage in 2023, hopefully, in the fall.”
Misty Copeland and Olu Evans did not share much of their pregnancy journey with the public largely because of their commitment to privacy. “My personal life I’ve really kept pretty private my whole career,” Misty revealed to PEOPLE. “Definitely with my son, I wouldn’t have him probably be on camera for anything,” the ballerina said. “But when it comes to my career and what I’m doing, I’m really open.”
Misty continues to set the bar high with her performances on stage. The ballerina is also a best-selling author and designer for the Greatness Wins women’s line.
“It’s never easy, but I wouldn’t be able to do it without having a support system,” Misty said of her commitment to balancing her responsibilities as a mom with a demanding career. “My husband is incredible and he’s an amazing dad,” Copeland told the press. “He’s been there for me throughout my entire career to help me to be able to balance those things,” the ballerina said.
Some wonder why Misty Copeland is selective about the events she chooses to attend. “You have to make sacrifices,” the new mom told the press. “I’m not at big events every night and out partying and going to dinners,” Copeland shared. “I have to make sacrifices to be able to do all the things that I want to do.”

Misty Copeland made history in 2015 as the first African-American to be promoted to principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre. Her promotion inspired little girls to dream big and work hard to achieve their goals.
