Lela Rochon and Antoine Fuqua sent their daughter, Asia Fuqua, off to prom this past weekend. Lela shared pictures of her daughter rocking her iconic red gown from The Waiting To Exhale premiere in 1995.
“Yes, I saved the dress,” Lela told her social media fans. “[I] wasn’t sure why but now I know,” the celebrity mom said. Asia looked like her mom in more ways than one. “She’s so gorgeous,” Naturi Naughton told Lela. “I can’t get over how grown up she is now,” the actress added. Tameka Foster wrote, “Your ‘mini-me.’ You guys are so beautiful.”
Some may remember Lela Rochon wearing her little red dress at the Waiting To Exhale premiere in 1995. Rochon posed with her fellow cast members – Loretta Devine, Whitney Houston, and Angela Bassett – while on the red carpet. The pictures turned out to be a moment in time as the film is now considered a classic.
“It was my first time in a lead role,” Rochon, who portrays Robin in the film, said during a recent interview with ZORA. “I fought so hard for it because I felt very right for Robin, and the fact that Whitney was already cast was huge to me,” Lela shared.
Waiting To Exhale changed the film industry in many ways. “It’s really affected, the way people look at Black women,” Loretta Devine told ZORA. “It’s really about the relationships between Black women, and that hadn’t been seen before on movie screens,” Michael Beach, who portrays Bernadine’s husband in the film, added. “That fact alone makes it a classic.”
Terry McMillan is responsible for the story that fueled the iconic Waiting To Exhale film. His book serves as the blueprint and title for the movie.
There has been much talk about presenting a modern version of Waiting To Exhale. Such a possibility, however, is not necessarily something Lela Rochon embraces. The celebrity has two kids in all.
