Seventeen-year-old Sterling Chandler is already making photography history as he is the youngest photographer to have work featured in British GQ according to CelebMix.
The talented teen’s photo of Patrick Hutchinson made it into the popular men’s magazine as a complement to the January/February 2021 article on Hutchinson’s Men of the Year-Humanitarian Award. If you remember, Hutchinson was the man who held a BLM counter-protester on his shoulder to keep him safe during the London protests last summer.
Chandler’s images appeared along award-winning photographer Misan Harriman, the first black man to shoot a cover for British Vogue and British GQ January/February 2021 cover models, Lewis Hamilton, Sir Captain Tom Moore, Marcus Rashford, Shawn Mendes, John Boyega, Paul Mescal and more.
The seventeen-year-old Londoner has himself worked with a myriad of famous faces and musicians such as The Specials, Che Lingo, and others.
Chandler has also had work featured in publications such as The Independent, BBC News, Dazed & GQ Magazine.
So just how did this talented teen get into photography? Well, in an interview with CelebMix, he said, that, “I started off experimenting taking photos with an old iPhone I was given, and my mum and dad encouraged me to pursue it after seeing some things I’d done, and it just grew from there. Then a few years ago, family friend photographer Lawrence Watson saw some of my pictures and was very encouraging, and since then I continued exploring it, investing time and energy. I saved up and bought my first camera last year.”
In addition to photography, Chandler is an expert in digital marketing, servicing a very high profile client list that includes Universal Music Group artists, global brands such as Gucci, among others.
In addition to his truly amazing talents, Chandler is also an ambassador for People Dem Collective (PDC), an organization that is focused on media inclusion for Black, brown, and diaspora communities.
“I’m very pleased to be a People Dem Collective ambassador,” Chandler said of the program. “It’s fantastic because it brings you into contact with professionals from all the creative industries. Just to have the experience of spending time and working with them is enlightening and informative and has helped me to grow. It’s exciting PDC have set up here in the UK, and the collaborative opportunities and experiences they are opening up for young talent, particularly for under-represented Black talent and young people, is extremely valuable.”
Congratulations, Chandler! We cannot wait to see what amazing things await you in the future. We know that this is just the beginning!
