Willow Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith had a cathartic moment during their recent Red Table Talk session with Demi Moore and her daughters. The show was initially about Demi’s daughters, Rumer and Tallulah, getting things off their chest regarding their mother’s past addiction to drugs and how it affected them. The session became healing to Jada and Willow when the subject turned to vulnerability.
“Willow had a moment [of vulnerability] not too long ago,” Jada revealed. The celebrity mom went on to tell her daughter, “You had that upset and you were crying on the couch and I just came to you and held you and I said to myself, I wish I had done this more to her. When you can just hold your little girl, have her tears, have her pain.”
Both Jada and Willow took the time to appreciate the moment. Willow, however, remembered a time when things were not as open-ended in the Smith household.
“Back in the day if I would be crying or have an upset, the energy was always like, take that somewhere else and deal with it on your own,” Willow said. Jada responded to her daughter by explaining the source of her tendency to hide emotions and require her kids to do the same.
“That’s how I was treating myself, I didn’t want to be with my own feelings,” the celebrity mom shared. “There’s this wall, this armor and I was thinking about how it does a disservice to everybody we love, including ourselves,” Jada explained. The veteran actress then turned to her daughter to offer an apology for not encouraging Willow to embrace her emotions.
“I want to just take a moment and say to you, I’m sorry,” the celebrity mom said. “The way we grew up, the way my mother grew up, you feel like you have to be strong and the first thing you want to do is teach your girls how to be strong.”
