Amandla Stenberg was one of many honored at 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards in Beverly Hills a few days ago. She had words at the event as she received the award for “Hollywood Breakout Performance Actress.”
Amandla’s performance in The Hate U Give is nothing short of amazing. The celebrity takes the helm of lead as she acts out the drama that is Angie Thomas’ Young Adult (YA) fiction book.
The Hate U Give tells the story of 16-year-old Starr Carter who is seemingly torn between two worlds. On the one hand, Starr is a girl growing up in the hood. On the other hand, the teen is the up-and-coming scholar at the high school she attends across town, which, coincidentally, has a majority population that is Caucasian.
The two worlds collide when Starr’s unarmed friend is murdered by an over-ambitious police officer. Starr must decide whether to tell the truth, and subsequently become an activist, or remain silent and maintain her status as a prestigious teen at her school.

Amandla Stenberg commented on her role in The Hate U Give during a recent interview. “Everything about her resonated with me,” Stenberg told POPSUGAR.
“I had a really similar experience to Starr growing up, in terms of attending a school that was mostly white and privileged and pretty homogeneous in terms of the mentality and culture. But then I lived across town in a neighborhood that was black and lower income. And I was exposed to a completely different culture there.”
@TheHateUGive Is the most touching movie I’ve seen so far and it was too good, I cried a couple of times but it’s throwing facts, I’d recommend it to others. #TheHateUGive
