Alexis Olympia will officially be a 1-year-old in just a few days. Serena Williams, however, isn’t making any plans to celebrate her daughter’s birthday outside of simply acknowledging young Alexis’ growth and development.
“Olympia doesn’t celebrate birthdays,” Serena recently said during a press conference. “We’re Jehova’s Witnesses so we don’t do that,” the tennis champion added.
Jehovah’s Witnesses are adamant about keeping in stride with the Christian Bible. Such is the reason why they refrain from celebrating birthdays, holidays, and other festivities with pagan roots. According to the religion’s website, “The only commemoration that Christians are required to keep involves, not a birth, but a death—that of Jesus.” Also, “The Bible never refers to a servant of God celebrating a birthday.”
Serena Williams is rearing her daughter in the ways of her respective religion, and Alexis Olympia is also teaching her mom a few things along the way. “Kids humble us,” the tennis star revealed in a recent Instagram post. Serena went on to share a story of how her daughter recently encouraged meekness.
“The other day on a flight home, Olympia had so much energy and insisted on running up and down the aisle,” Williams said. “When I finally got her to calm down and sit still, she threw up all over me and in the aisle.” Another person’s vomit on you will definitely put things into perspective.
Alexis Olympia is Serena Williams and husband Alexis Ohanian’s only child. Stay tuned for more celebrity mom news!
