Literacy rates continue to decline among certain groups in the United States. Reading is unquestionably the cornerstone of any and all professional careers and advancement. Understanding that fact and wanting to help make a difference, Kennedy R. Thompson took on the challenge to make reading cool again with the creation of NerdyGirlz Book Club.
Spreading her #blackgirlmagic, the young 10-year-old, with the help of her mother, started a small book club for she and her friends, fast forward to two hundred members later, and NerdyGirlz is stronger than ever.
“I didn’t expect my book club to become as big as it did. I just expected it to be me and a few friends,” Thompson said in a recent interview with TrueStar Jr. Magazine, “but I’m really happy about it.”
NerdyGirlz has lead the way to inspiring girls in this country to read but it has also gone international with inspiring girls to read in Kenya. Thompson sponsors several young people in the country to attend school with the help from funding from her book club state-side.
Thompson is a true humanitarian that has a bright future ahead of her all around. We cannot wait to hear more about this wonderful young lady with a passion for books and reading.
