What advice would you give kids who want to break into the business?
1. Be yourself – if you don’t book a role, it wasn’t meant for you, but don’t ever try to change the essence of who you are to appease casting; they can see right through that and you’ll never book.
2. Consistently work on your craft, whether it’s through classes or even being a strong consumer of TV/film. When I couldn’t afford an acting coach, class or workshop, and even when I get extremely busy working, if I have an upcoming audition, I make time, schedule time to watch a clip or something of a project of the filmmakers involved, before going in for the audition.
3. Research the tone of the TV show you’re auditioning for as well as the previous projects of the Directors and Producers if reading for a movie.
4. Learn to incorporate a piece of you in every role you audition for
5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions BEFORE you audition. You just might get some extra insight that will help set your audition apart, as a result of the newfound info shared by casting.
6. Make strong choices, but be flexible and make sure you know how to take notes and implement them in the next take.
7. Don’t try to be perfect in auditions
8. Stay hungry – keep consistent and keep at it.
9. If you don’t lay it on the line in the audition room or make the stakes high enough, chances are there was nothing special about your read… so for real, for real… GO FOR IT! DON’T HOLD BACK!
10. Pray. It’s a hectic often times crazy industry so keeping God in the midst is a must for me.
