At only 16-years-old, actress/activist Yara Shahidi has been a formidable champion for everything from human rights to girl power. It is no wonder that she was honored for her voice during the 6th annual WEEN Awards held this week at Escape in midtown Manhattan.
WEEN, The Women in Entertainment Network, is a non-profit organization that is committed to supporting, the positive portrayal of women in not only the entertainment industry but in society as a whole. Since its inception in 2007, WEEN has focused its energy to continuously molding the next generation of movers and shakers. Every summer, WEEN hosts the “WEEN Academy” which is a professional development program for women of color who are interested in solidifying their place within the entertainment industry.
This year’s honorees, in addition to Shahidi, included Lil Kim, Meagan Good, Ethiopia Habtemarian, Geneva Reed-Veal, (mother of Sandra Bland), Dia Simms, Teyana Taylor, and Elaine Welteroth.
