Nate Parker and his daughter were two of many in attendance at the screening of his upcoming film, Birth of A Nation, earlier this week. The actor took several pictures on the red carpet with his daughter who was all smiles while standing beside her dad.
Birth of A Nation tells the story of Nat Turner. The literate slave, who was also a preacher in antebellum South, orchestrated an uprising on August 21, 1831, that changed United States history. Turner’s uprising was one of only a few times that nearly seventy white men, women, and children were killed by their African servants in one setting. Nat Turner died on November 11, 1831, in Courtland, Virginia.
In many ways, Nate Parker shares the spirit of his onscreen character. Although the actor has never spearheaded an uprising, he has served as the leader of his family for many years. “My father passed away when I was very young, so I was head of household for a very long time,” Turner shared with PEOPLE. “Whether it came to cooking food or having to braid hair to get kids out of the door for school, I’ve been one that has — with the help of my mother — been a father figure for a lot of young ladies.”
Nate Parker has four kids with his wife, Sarah DiSanto, and five kids in all. Birth of A Nation makes its public debut on October 7, 2016.
