Audra McDonald was one of several artists honored at the 2015 National Medal of Arts ceremony on Thursday. The expectant star proudly received the award from President Obama during the event.
McDonald was all smiles while standing before attendees in the East Room of the White House. Morgan Freeman and Mel Brooks were also recipients of the badge of honor.
The National Medal of Arts award was created by Congress in 1984 to recognize individuals who make a substantial impact on society with their artistry. Since its inception, individuals from various industries have been honored as distinguished creatives.
Audra McDonald certainly fits the bill of remarkable with her acting and singing talents that light up the stage on Broadway. “I used to think I needed to have drama at all times or I wouldn’t have the fuel for the performance,” she said during a recent interview. “Now I know that’s not true. That doesn’t mean I don’t feel it, but I recognize it when I do, and put the brakes on. And if the performance isn’t what it might have been once, I’ve learned not to judge myself as much.”
Audra McDonald is expecting her first child with husband Will Swenson to arrive in coming weeks. The celebrity also has a daughter named Zoe from a previous relationship.
