In today’s world, moms can sometimes be expected to bring home the bacon, and cook it all while helping the kids with homework, packing tomorrow’s lunch and making sure that they brush their teeth before bed. It is easy to get lost in the daily routine, losing site of the simple things that bring joy to life and create lasting memories. The Real co-host Tamera Mowry-Housley, mom of 31/2-year-old Aden John Tanner and 13-month-old Ariah Talea, recently took a moment out of her busy schedule to speak with PEOPLE Magazine about how her children have helped her rediscover simply how to have fun.
“They have taught me to be present and enjoy the most simple things in life,” Mowry-Housley comments. “It gives me so much joy, especially as a busy mom, just giving them a bath, reading them a book, brushing our teeth together. They taught me how to have fun in the most simple moments.”
In the interview, Mowry-Housley confesses that one of her favorite things to do with her children is to finger paint. “Aden’s loved it ever since he was 6 months, so I wanted to introduce finger painting to Ariah,” she comments to the magazine. “I love seeing the curiosity on Aden’s face, and now Ariah’s. It’s cool to see them do it together.”
To continue the fun and make their space childproof and parent-stress-free, Mowry-Housley has also created a playroom for the kids as a designated space for crafting. “If you let them carry a crayon or marker all around the house, they’ll think that any wall is okay to draw on. Aden once got a Sharpee somewhere, and he painted all over our bathroom cabinet. That wasn’t fun!”
Let’s all take a page from Mowry-Housely’s playbook and remember to stop and smell the roses with our kids even if it does involve finger paints and Sharpees. Time will pass in the blink of an eye but memories last forever.
