First Lady Michelle Obama will host a College Signing Day event in New York City in coming weeks and Yara Shahidi will be one of many young stars to attend. The ‘Black-ish’ actress will join a myriad of other youth as they prepare to take on the next level in the world of academia.
More than 4,000 students will gather at the Harlem Armory to be inspired and commit to universities. Yara will certainly serve as an inspiration as her passion for STEM is evident. The actress has participated in a few promotional efforts and recently referenced the educational program during an interview with Los Angeles Times.
“I am a STEM advocate,” Yara said. “What’s so amazing is seeing young girls empowered in STEM fields because there is an overwhelming lack of a female presence. I feel like it’s so important that somebody’s love or interest in STEM isn’t squashed by this idea that ‘Well, I’m not a man, this is not appropriate for a woman.”
Shahidi will soon be able to pursue her passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in college when she begins her first semester in the fall. The young star can be seen on ‘Black-ish’ every Wednesday on ABC.
