Serge Ibaka is living a new life now that his daughter, Raine, is by his side. The NBA star shares his experience as a parent after having his daughter relocate to Oklahoma from the Congo with Yahoo! Sports.
“Her being here changed my life,” says Ibaka. “She’s a gift from God. I try to do the best possible I can to be the best person I can be for her, to be there for her and support her.”
Serge found out that he was a father five years after Raine was born. “I left [the] Congo and then the news came to my family,” the star said in a documentary called Son of the Congo. “My dad took all the responsibility [of fathering Raine]. Finally, two years ago, he decides to tell me the truth.”
While some would have been angered by such secrecy, Ibaka took his father’s act as a sweet gesture. I knew he did that to protect me,” the NBA star says. “I knew he didn’t want me to have that kind of pressure. He said to me ‘I was just doing that to protect you.'”
