Small Business Saturday was a success thanks to consumers like the Obamas who supported local mom and pops stores. The president and his daughters, Sasha and Malia, visited several D.C-area stores that included Upshur Street Books and Pleasant Pops.
The Obama girls picked out a number of books while at Upshur. Diary of A Wimpy Kid seemed to reign supreme as there were several books from the series in the girls’ bag. Sasha and Malia’s shopping experience also included treats at Pleasant Pops. The girls picked out homemade frozen delights that totaled $9. “What a bargain,” said the president. “This is the highlight of the girls’ Small Business Saturday.”
Small Business Saturday is intended to bring revenue to homegrown retail shops that do not have the means to advertise like major chains. This year definitely proved successful as millions of consumers got out and supported neighborhood businesses. Reports show an eight percent increase in sales as nearly 100 million customers populated local mom and pops stores around the country.
“It’s very encouraging to see small businesses participate every year and more shoppers giving local entrepreneurs a chance to compete for their business,” tweeted National Federation of Independent Business President and CEO Dan Danner. His company partnered with American Express to help make this year’s event a success.
This is the second to last Small Business Saturday that the Obamas will celebrate while in the White House.
