Niobe is here! Amandla Stenberg debuted her comic book, Niobe: She is Life at her Launch Party held at Hi De Ho Comics And Books on November 7, 2015 in Santa Monica, California. The literary work addresses social issues that include race and women’s rights through a character who mirrors Amandla’s fearlessness.
“We often hear about the hero’s journey, but that hero is rarely a girl and certainly not one of color. I want girls to know that they can be at the center of a big story—their own lives— and they don’t have to be marginalized,” says the young star of her book.
It was just a few weeks ago that Amandla expressed her desire to encourage African American girls to dream big. “My larger goal is to affect and empower more Black girls,” said the Hunger Games star during an interview with ESSENCE. She went on to address the criticism that she has received since posting her first video about race in America several months ago.
“Even though the response to what I’ve talked about isn’t always necessarily positive, I’ve thought to myself, ‘Wow, it’s so incredible that we are even having those conversations and that that was my doing.’ I felt so honored and proud that I could even bring these important things to the forefront,” shared the star.
