There are some lessons in life that girls don’t understand until they become women themselves. Sonequa Martin-Green knows this to be true when it comes to motherhood. The star actress tells Good Housekeeping that she didn’t understand her mother’s selflessness until she became a parent.
“[My mother] would always tell us how much she loved us and how she would be willing to do anything for us, and every now and then she would say, ‘You’ll get it one day.’ Now I think of her and I tell her about it all the time. I just say, ‘I get it now, Mama, I get it.’ How much I love this boy I can now also redirect it and understand that she loves me in that same way.”
Sonequa and husband Kenric Green welcomed their son, Kenric II, in January. The baby was born in Los Angeles and weighed a healthy 8 lbs., 4 oz. Although she has been on a diet ever since then, Sonequa admits that she sometimes falls off the wagon when it comes to shedding the baby weight. “There are certainly times when we all lose it and just eat whatever the heck we want, but if you eat clean, drink your body weight in water daily, and avoid empty carbs, you’ll have more energy and be more focused.”
