Everyone did not like Zendaya Coleman’s dreadlocks that she rocked at the 2015 Academy Awards. In fact, a few critics were very forward. Giuliana Rancic of E!’s ‘Fashion Police’ told viewers that she felt like Zendaya “smells like patchouli oil or maybe weed” during a recap of the awards on Sunday night. Zendaya certainly didn’t take such comments lightly. In fact, the young adult responded with a post on Instagram shortly thereafter.
“There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful,” began the star. “Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left me in awe.” Zendaya went on to classify Giuliana’s comments as “ignorant slurs” and “outrageously offensive.”
She further explained, “I don’t usually feel the need to respond to negative things but certain remarks cannot go unchecked. I’ll have you know my father, brother, best childhood friend and little cousins all have locs. … None of which smell of marijuana.” Zendaya concluded her response by saying, “I suggest some people should listen to India Arie’s ‘I Am Not My Hair’ and contemplate a little before opening your mouth so quickly to judge.”
Giuliana Rancic later issued an apology for her comments by tweeting, “Dear @Zendaya, I’m sorry I offended you and others. I was referring to a bohemian chic look. Had NOTHING to do with race and NEVER would!!!”
