Monica is one celebrity who believes in being involved. The R&B singer recently participated in a Box Tops panel discussion, where she talked about a time when her oldest son, Rodney Jr., was wrongfully disciplined in school.
“You have to know your child and really be involved,” said Monica of the incident. “I know my son. He does what he’s told. I was able to handle it in a positive way. I spoke with the principal, the other teachers and the students and we were able to resolve it because I’m active.”
Jemelleh Coes, Georgia’s 2014 Teacher of the Year, also participated in the discussion, and talked about some students’ feelings of inadequacy in the classroom. “You can tell they feel left behind and their parents feel like they don’t have the knowledge to engage them in school activities.”
Monica and ex-boyfriend Rodney Hill Sr., have two kids, Romelo and Rodney Jr., together. The singer has one child, Laiyah, with husband Shannon Brown.
The third annual Box Tops for Education Town Hall took place on April 3, 2014 inside the Oceans Ballroom of the Georgia Aquarium. Box Tops for Education, a program started by General Mills in 1996, has helped raise over $600 million for America’s schools.
