Michelle Obama, and daughters Sasha Obama and Malia Obama attended the 2013 Arthur Ashe Kids Day at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on August 24, 2013 in the Queens borough of New York City. During the event, the first lady promoted her “Let’s Move” campaign and encouraged attendees to incorporate a game of tennis into their workouts every now and then.
“It’s a great way to stay healthy, to stay fit,” said Mrs. Obama. “[Tennis is] a lifelong sport, it’s something I’ve tried to tell my kids – I forced them into playing tennis … it’s a great way to stay active.” Michelle also praised Serena Williams and other athletes who inspire kids to get active by telling her audience of listeners, “When I was your age, I didn’t have tennis roles models. I didn’t live in a community where there were tennis courts. You guys are going to be way ahead of me.” Mrs. Obama played around on the court a bit before calling it a day at the Open. Sasha and Malia watched in delight as their mom ran and hit the ball like a pro.
Michelle has encouraged thousands of kids and parents to get active through her ‘Let’s Move’ initiative. The First Lady has even gone to the length of writing a gardening book that features healthy alternatives to eating in hopes of getting America back on the right track in the health and wellness department. To date, more than 35% of adults in the United States are obese. Nearly half of that percentage consists of African Americans who are overweight.
