Joy Enriquez and Rodney Jerkins’ reality show, ‘House of Joy,’ sent positive vibes to viewers everywhere when it made its debut last month. Not only did audiences have the opportunity to see the celebrated Rodney Jerkins and famous singer Joy Enriquez at home, but they also got a glimpse of their amazing support system that consists of Joy’s parents and siblings. Joy and Rodney recently sat down with The Next2Shine to talk about their show and family of five, which began nearly ten years ago when Joy was introduced to Rodney by L.A. Reid. Check out what the loving couple had to say!
Joy’s take on the show and its purpose.
“Our show is called ‘House of Joy’ and its my 3 kids, myself, my husband, as well as my dad, my brother, my sister. We all kind of live together, work together, spend time together and it kind of help each other get to that next level, and having 3 kids from myself. I’m a singer and I started as a singer and that’s how I met my husband, and we met in 1999, and got married in 2004, had children in 2008. I’m trying to get back into the music. I need lots of help if I want to get back into doing music, knowing that my children are gonna be around family and loving family, and that’s what we want to get to people like, ‘Listen, like hey if you’re a mom and you wanna get back out there, you can.’ And for us it takes an army to raise to a family. It really does and we have children all under the age of 5 (5, 3, and 8 months)…We need each other and that’s what we want to tell people like, ‘pull together, come together, and work together’ and that’s what we’re doing.”
Rodney talks fatherhood and career.
“There’s far more working fathers out there or working men out there and you have to create that balance no matter how hard you’re working. You have to keep the balance, do activities with the kids, have the family around and support one another and I think that’s what it’s all about, showing how to have a successful marriage with the successful family and it’s all in the communication. So, if you allow that, with a lot of humor as well. We keep it light and funny and the kids keep us on our toes all the time and keep us laughing and I think people will really enjoy the show.”
Throwback memories from Joy on how she and Rodney met and wed.
“We met each other in 1999 when he worked on my first album when he was supposed to give me a hit back then and I was sent by LA Reid face to face, they said “Rodney, here is our artist. She is a Latin artist, please give her a hit like you gave Jennifer Lopez’s ‘If You Had My Love.’ He decided not to give me a hit, and decided to take me on a date and take me to a movie while I was in New Jersey for 2 weeks. [He was] supposed to create a smash, which you call a hit in the music industry, and he did. He took me to his parent’s house, he took me to cookouts, and he took me to everything but a studio [to] give me the song I wanted. In 2003, we sat at Michael Jackson’s house. We were married by 2004.”
