Nia Long is an advocate for parenthood and encourages women to have children for the right reasons. The actress recently addressed the idea of women using children as a means of financial and emotional stability during a Planned Parenthood event, and the theme of responsibility shined through.
“I think women need to be responsible before making the choice [to become a parent] and do it for the right reasons,” said the actress. “If you’re going to have a baby to save a relationship, that doesn’t work. If you’re going to have a baby to collect a check from someone else, that’s not the right thing. You have to be responsible and be able to stand on your own.”
Nia is sometimes viewed as a single mom because of her decision to have two children out of wedlock. She, however, assures fans and foes that her choice to give birth before marriage was planned and not sought after because she needed extra money from the kids’ fathers. In fact, Nia and Ime Udoka, Kez’s father, were in a relationship for several months before the actress gave birth. Long and Massai’s father, Massai Dorsey II, were also in a long term relationship before exploring parenthood together.
What are your thoughts? Does Nia have a point?
