Erica Campbell, the other Mary in the Gospel duo MaryMary, recently interviewed with BET. The singer, and soon-to-be mother of three, discussed family life with the media source, and gave tips to other families for maintaining a healthy home.
The key to a healthy home.
“Three basic ways to keep your home healthy, pray for your family, make sure there’s communication and realize they’re the reason for it all. Most of the time when you’re trying to gain success, it’s usually because you want to benefit your family. God comes first. There’s a scripture that says, “Charity begins at home.” Charity means love. Love begins at home and then spreads abroad. If I go out and I’m singing about love to the whole world and my daughter sees me on TV and rolls her eyes because she knows I didn’t spend time with her, read a book to her or put her to bed or anything. She wouldn’t believe me. They are my first responsibility.”
Maintaining a balance between family duties and career goals.
“Being attentive to my children isn’t the hard part—that’s automatic . Trying to create music and expand your brand—that’s the challenge. [I know] that I am coming home to people who love me, smiling kids and my healthy, happy home. I don’t want my kids to feel like, “Oh God, mommy’s leaving again.” They hate it, but they know how much I love them.”
Holiday plans.
“We are having Christmas breakfast at my house, probably with about 75 members of my family. They start coming around nine and don’t stop until about 12 or 1, asking for eggs and waffles . They roll through all morning long. We end up going to the movies or hanging that night. It’s a day full of family.”
