Sean “Diddy” Combs, his son Justin Combs,17, and his mother Janice Combs, attended the 2011 Jackie Robinson Foundation Awards Gala held on March 7, 2011 in New York City.
Sean was given the ROBIE Achievement in Industry Award for his innovation in music and fashion, and his work with the Children’s Hope Foundation, Daddy’s House social programs and the public schools of New York City.
“I don’t even know where to start,” Combs said in a thank you speech after receiving his award. “One thing I want to say is this is the best award I’ve ever gotten in my entire life. When I was coming up in the game, I wanted to get a Grammy. … There’s a lot of things that you want growing up, but this is something I [never] asked for or knew that I would receive, and I feel truly humbled and blessed.”
He added, “The greatness of a man like Jackie Robinson comes not only from his talent as an athlete. It comes from his spirit as a humanitarian. He had to be thinking about not just himself; He had to be thinking about others. He had to be thinking about the future. Jackie Robinson once said that ‘A life is not important except for the impact it has on other lives.’ ”
