For Kelis, motherhood “is literally the best thing in the world.” Kelis says that she adores her son Knight Jones, who has “got a lot of personality. He’s hilarious. He’s like a little shrunken man.”
The singer admits that much of her inspiration for her new album, Flesh Tone, came from being pregnant with her little man.
“Pregnancy gives a woman a strong sense of validation,” she says. “[When you’re pregnant], you wake up everyday and internally everything is working perfectly and you look at the world and everything sort of fits together. It’s hard not to realize there is a creator and he created all of us.”
On one of the songs on her album, titled “Song for the Baby”, Kelis sings, “I’ll never sugarcoat any life lessons for you/’Cause I wanna make you equipped for the best/And I can’t always be here to rescue you when life gets crazy/But I love you more than you’ll ever know,” revealing much of the adoration she has for her son.
As for her divorce from rapper Nas, Kelis says, “Yeah everything’s fine. We are divorced, but there is no point to fighting — there is nothing to fight about. I am super happy; my life is awesome. We are friends, we get along now and it’s all good.”
