“It’s been quite a ride” for singer Jill Scott since becoming a mom a little over a year ago. In her own words she explains, “I got engaged, that didn’t work out. I got pregnant, that did work out. I moved to Los Angeles and still live in Philly. I’m pretty bi-coastal.”
Jill says that her13-month-old son Jett Hamilton has taught her time management.
“I’ve learned some things — like the nighttime is the right time to work. I tried to record during the day in order to get back home in time to put my son to sleep, but it’s very difficult to do that. It’s impossible to feel warm as a singer at 6 or 7 or 8 o’clock (at night), so I found myself getting to the studio at 9 or 10 or 11, which has been a little bit of a hurdle for me, especially as a new mom. I do have a village around me who help out. I also compartmentalize really hard. So when I record, I only record; when I am doing a film, I only do a film. I don’t go to a recording studio at night and do a film scene during the day. When I write, I don’t listen to music. I make sure nothing distracts me, so when I’m a mom, I’m just a mom. What I’ve learned is that I can’t compartmentalize that one. Being a mom is 24/7. It’s fantastic watching this little person expand every day. Oh wow, whew!”
Currently, Scott is touring with her son. “This baby has really learned to adjust to me. We have a kismet relationship here. If I don’t get enough sleep, I talk to my kid and say, ‘Hey, how about another hour’ and he goes back to sleep,” she says.
